Pans Labyrinth
I went to the movie tonight, not really knowing what I was going to see. I used to go to the movies all of the time, but somehow I have fallen off track, and have sadly missed some good ones for sure.
What jumped out at me tonight was Pans Labyrinth by Guillermo del Toros. I was going on the title. I like Pan, and I like mazes, so I thought I would give it a go.
The movie was set in about 1944 around the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War, and had subtitles (which I also like). It was both heavy and beautiful, with a lot of blood and violence (not my favorite thing) mingled with magic and childlike innocence. I love fairys, magic, and the idea of other worldliness.
It was written like a fairy-tale, and had lots of magical moments. I squirmed in my seat during parts, covered my eyes and turned my head. I also cried, but was totally transfixed.
I don’t want to say too much about it, but I left crying. Whether that is good thing, I don’t know, perhaps I needed to cry, but I always appreciate something that moves me, be it to laughter or tears.
I’m very glad I went to the movie this evening, and plan to do it more often.

My husband and I went to see it last weekend. It was so well done! What struck me most was the love and care that went into every detail. It really was artful. The violence had me covering my eyes a bit too, but the violence was redeemed by the quality. The makeup artist acheived grisly pefection in the scene that caused the captain to require stitches later. Really, I can’t think of another movie like Pan’s Labryinth.
The movies are such a treat. Like you, I havent’ been going as often as usual, but that one was very worthwhile.

Absolutely, I was blown away, and I can be a bit of a critic.
And movies are a definite treat, esp ones like this.
