The lovely dentist experience

I got to enjoy the dentist again today. During my cleaning, we discovered that a small filling had popped out, and it needed to be refilled (thank the powers to be, that I had no new cavities)

I loathe novocain, and I am highly sensitive to it. In fact I beg for the least amount possible, and it is still too much. My dentist Bill knows this, as we go way back.

Today, He said, “the cavity is so superficial, that we don’t have to use any novocain if you don’t want”, and I said great, lets go. And so he went. pulling at my gums like they were silly putty, so that he could make space to sand my tooth. He says “Now hold still, it might be a little sensitive”. Uh huh, I about jumped off the table for a second, and he said, “Arline, you have to be still, I could slip and cut your lip” (not such an appealing thought), so I took a breath and surrendered as much as I could given the fact that this man (whom I really trust) is rummaging around my tooth and gums with sharp and foreign objects. Finally the filling came, which was no big deal, but to top the filling off, his assistant pulls out this space age wand that had a neon blue light and places it on my tooth. Not only did it activate my nerve impulse, I felt like I was being microwaved.

Why no novocain you may wonder. It may have been less sensitive, but I would have felt the discomfort of the novocain shot, I would have still felt the pressure of all of his work, and I would still be numb as I write this.

Now I feel no pain, I am not tweeked out by that icky drug, and my face does not feel like it has melted off.

Thankfully I don’t have to go back to the dentist for another 6 months, and I hope to be completely cavity free.

    Wow, girl! You’re brave.
I hate novacaine too, but the idea of squirming around in the chair trying to suffer through sounds worse to me. I’d be too chicken to try it.

I had a dentist tell me he had to do just “a little bit” one time and that we would do it without Novacaine.

He proceeded to whip out a drill and DRILL on my teeth, and IGNORE my protests!!!

Needless to say, I never went back to him again.

I have had more dental work than I care to think about, and todays adventure was not as traumatic as some, I have to admit though, I did second guess my choice there for a second, but as soon as I relaxed, everything was OK, and over before I knew it.

Lorin, I can’t believe that your dentist would flat out ignore your protests. That is just not cool. I would not go back either!!!!!
